The Power of Multiplication Brochures for Effective Direct Instruction

When to Use Multiplication Brochures Whole Class

One way to use Multiplication Brochures is during Whole Class Direct Instruction. This is a useful approach when you are just starting to use the brochures in your classroom. We recommend doing one set of multiplication brochures together as a class, such as the 10's. When you do this together, students become familiar with the format and what is expected in each section. You can model each activity while students follow along. Because each fact family is set up the same way, your students will be able to use this fact family as a reference for the other brochures.

Whole class direct instruction is ideal for teaching students the different multiplication strategies in the brochures. Some of the strategies in the brochure bundle are repeated addition, number lines, equal groups, arrays, number bonds and skip counting. As the students are exposed to the brochures, teacher instruction is reduced, since each fact family follows the same format.

Pacing of Completing Multiplication Brochures During Whole Class Direct Instruction 

Once you have modeled an entire fact family, students will need less and less guidance from you. You can quickly go over the brochure and its components and then go around to help as needed. There are a couple options to consider for the pacing of multiplication brochure completion.

Option 1: Teachers display a poster that shows the class' current fact family and assigns one brochure that is to be completed in a set amount of time. When we have implemented brochures this way, we usually gave 2 days for each brochure with the idea of one side per day. Again, this depends on the amount of time you have available for students to complete the brochure.

Option 2: Teacher displays a poster that shows the class' current fact family and assigns all three brochures to be completed in a set amount of time. When we have done this, we usually give 1-2 weeks for all three brochures to be completed. Again, this depends on the amount of time we allow in class for completion. *Note: We have found that some students struggle with time management and procrastination. All three brochures can be overwhelming for some. Teachers know what is best for each student and their individual needs.
